Castello is one of the largest districts of Venice and takes its name from a fortress that unfortunately no longer exists. The main industry in the area was the Arsenal, where the large warships for the Venetian fleet were once built. The area on the other side of the quay is rather tranquil with its small, winding lanes, old picturesque buildings and beautiful churches, such as the Santi Giovanni e Paolo. The most famous and popular shopping area, Riva degli Schiavoni, is also located here and is where you can find a variety of goods, as well as souvenirs and tour agencies.
